Buckhead Homes and Condos for Sale
Buckhead, the city’s famous district with both northeast and northwest addresses, is an area where districts and neighborhoods overlap. Brookwood Hills, Peachtree Hills, and Garden Hills are each distinct neighborhoods, but they are all claimed by Buckhead, as are Peachtree Heights and Collier Hills. As defined by the Buckhead Coalition leadership group, Buckhead comprises all of Atlanta north of I-75, I-85, Peachtree Creek to Cobb County in the west, the city limits in the north, and Dekalb County in the east.
In the 1910s and `20s, Buckhead began to lure wealthy Atlantans who wanted more seclusion than was offered by such residential showplace as Druid Hills and Ansley Park. Today Buckhead has a variety of home types and sizes, but when most people envision Buckhead real estate, they think of West Paces Ferry Road and the Tuxedo Park neighborhood. Along West Paces and the streets turning off it are homes of astonishing elegance and beauty, many that were built as summer retreats for Atlanta’s wealthy families. This area is home to the Georgia Governor’s Mansion and the Swan House, the opulent 1928 mansion that presides over the Atlanta History Center’s grounds. Philip Shutze designed the Swan House and other area homes; Neel Reid also designed fabulous mansions in the area. Golf great Bobby Jones lived here; Anne Cox Chambers of the Cox media empire, one of the world’s wealthiest women, still does. Windcrofte, at 3640 Tuxedo Road, was the home of Coca-Cola president Robert Woodruff. Tuxedo Park prices start at $700,000 and can go as high as $5 million. However, a custom-designed architectural wonder can cost as much as $20 million.
Northwest of central Buckhead and about 8 miles north of downtown is Chastain Park, named for former Fulton County Commissioner Troy G. Chastain. The popular park has a golf course, athletic fields, a crafts center, and an art gallery. Its best-known feature is its outdoor amphitheater, which holds nearly 6,000 people and presents some 60 popular and classical concerts between the spring and fall. The streets surrounding the park feature many fine homes. Chastain Park home prices run from $500,000 to $2 million.
